Gauge Maintenance

If you want to make a ride on railway in your garden, the width of the garden has to be at least 8 to 9 foot wide, so you can at least have a track with a 6 foot radious or more. Our track has a 5 inch gauge. In the winter, the track will contract a little bit and when it's summer the track will expand a little. If you want the best track, you will have to get it from "Maxitrack".(that's where I got it from!). They also sell points for around £120 but it depends on the size of the raidious.

The Radius

Your radius has to be about 6 to 10 foot or more. Ours has a 6 foot raidious so the train can just about go round or track. All of the track has to be the same level and the the whole line has to be safe. If you wanted a metal "Gauge Check" you should get it from www.rideonrailways.co.uk. Also every one or two weeks you should check if the fish plates are screwed on properly. It is easy to forget to have a check on the line so you should put up some rules or something up in you're shed (That's what we have done and it seems to be running perfectly!).

Safety On The Line

(1) No one should be on the track when the train is in motion.

(2) Always keep feet on the running board at all times when the train is moving.

(3) Only get on and off of the carriage when the train has stopped.

(4) Do not go 15 mph round the curve.

(5) Always wear padded footwear when riding on the train.

(6) Do not lean outwards on the tight corners, or the carriage is likely to topple.

(7) It is up to the driver to make sure all is well before setting off.

(8) Driver should slow down around the corners, and just before they get to one.

(9) Try not to lean side to side on the carriage because otherwise it is likely to de-rail.

(10) Overall, be safe and have fun!
